Music Department
At Ryde Secondary College, all Year 7 and 8 students complete the mandatory music course - two periods in Year 7 and three periods in Year 8. In Year 7 the students study concepts as well as developing performance skills.
All students learn to play keyboard and guitar and perform solo items in class for their peers. Through Year 8 they continue performing as well as completing a detailed study of Film Music.
Many students then elect to continue with music in Year 9 and 10. The elective courses see students participate in a range of musical activities: Performance, Composition, Aural and Music History.
Music Course 1 and Music Course 2 are offered in Years 11 and 12. These students are all expected to specialise in an instrument or voice and perform publicly in solo appearances or in ensemble.
FACILITIES
Ryde Secondary College has two specialist classrooms as well as a large rehearsal space which is highly sought after by students during lunch and study periods. The classrooms have easy access to guitars and keyboards for class use.
The performance room is also set up with computers for use in composition and with instruments ready for ensemble work.
ENRICHMENT
All musicians are encouraged to join the Concert Band and the Orchestra. These students as well as other talented performers attend a Music Enrichment Camp every year. At the camp the students rehearse in their ensemble as well as spend time individually with a tutor.
The college has stringed, wind instruments and guitars for hire. Music tutors are available during school hours and after school hours for individual or group lessons in a wide range of instruments.
PERFORMANCE OPPORTUNITIES
Music students play processionals, recessionals and the National Anthem at every college assembly and on formal occasions. The College Concert Band and the College Orchestra perform publicly for civic ceremonies and compete in a variety of Eisteddfods and competitions.
